every time I draw an OC Iāve had since I was a child I think of how broken my younger selfās drawings were and how perseverance and the sheer force of obsession kept me drawing ;;;;
and I look at drawings of the same OCs from when I was like 13 and then I look at the way I can draw them now and Iām just;;; filled with a fondness for my younger self for sticking at it bc itās entirely bc they didnāt just ragequit and give up when something looked bad that I can draw any better at all;;
I would love to jump through time and show them Aoki or my mewsona and be like ālook youāll get to properly draw digitally eventually! Youāll get better at so much of what frustrates you now! Look! This is like this because of you!ā Progress can take a long time so it can feel disheartening when youāre stuck struggling trying to get a thing to work. The payoff happens gradually and you only realise how far youāve come once you stop looking at where youāre struggling now and look back at where you struggled before and see the growth that happened without you noticing
I guess I sometimes have to remember that more. That what I struggle with now may be something I struggle less with in the future if I keep at it. That one day I might look back at where I am now and think boy have I grown since then. I hope so!;;;
#Also I love seeing younger meās versions of those OCs bc the evolution is fun to see#like with Aoki the design shifted drastically in the very first months of their existence#but once they solidified Iāve pretty much never changed it since like 2009 or whatever ;;#I mean all of the above is true of canon characters I drew obsessively too of course but like#thereās something about OCs and the fact they came from your head that adds to it#bc youāre feeling your way around a design that youāre also still coming up with and adjusting#Even now with my current OCs Iām still figuring them out and itās just a lot of fun

an interview with @changingthefairy-taleā
What are you working on right now? Right now, Iām focused on BellarkeFic-for-BLM (I just got an amazing canon prompt Iām really excited to finish). Iāve also been participating in this round of the Chopped Challenge, which has been fun and challenging. In between prompts, Iāve got two WIPs that Iām slowly cranking through. Shoutout to every single reader whoās been incredibly patient while Iāve been so slow on those updates ā though, reminder that you can donate to a BLM organization (even a $3 donation works) and request an update to get those higher on my prio list while Iām focused on that initiative.
Whatās something youād like to write one day? My absolute dream job and the ultimate goal is to become a showrunner for a prime time TV show. I love TV shows ā I love the way actors and directors and crew take a script and breath life into it, I love how you take a general idea for a story and mold it into something amazing as you go, I love how a series gives a story more time to be fleshed out and explored, I love the concept of a writers room and collaborating on a story. Itās a different ballgame from fic writing (which I do for fun) and travel writing (which I do for a living), but Iām determined to make it happen. JRoth, Iām coming for your job, babe. š
What is the fanwork youāre most proud of? Iām still really new to fic writing, especially compared to some of the powerhouse writers in this fandom. And Iām sure one of my WIPs (when finished) will probably supersede this. BUT, my one-shot about Madi calling Bellamy on The Ring (She called you for 2,199 days) is something Iām really proud of. Iām a long-winded writer, so one-shots have never come naturally to me. This one justā¦clicked. Itās got some good lines in there that Iām proud of, and based on the feedback Iāve gotten, it really made readers feel something and connect to the story. Itās not my longest story or my most thought-out. But it shows my growth as a writer these past few months, and Iām proud of that.
Why did you first start writing fic? I started writing fic as a creative outlet for my writing. My day job is writing about travel and credit cards. And while I enjoy that, itās just not as creative. My dream is to write for a TV show though, and I was craving a way to flex my creative writing muscles in a low-stress way. I started watching The 100 when it first came out, but I didnāt really get into the fandom until I came back to the show during the S5/6 hiatus. Thatās when I started reading fics and reblogging stuff about the show on Tumblr. During the S6/7 hiatus, I had this idea for a Greys Anatomy AU, and my sister (who is also a major fan of the show) was like, āYou literally write things for a living. If you want to write a Greyās AU for t100, there is absolutely nothing stopping you.ā I published my first chapter on that The Choices We Make in Dec. 2019, and the rest is history.
What frustrates you most about fic writing? For me, I think that the most frustrating thing isnāt even about fic writing itself; itās the fact that itās a side-hobby and not something I can dedicate my full attention to. When you write all day for your day job, then do some for your freelance gig, and then turn around and try to write for a few hours every night for ficā¦ that gets hard sometimes ā especially since starting quarantine where Iām not traveling, going out with friends, getting a break from it, etc. Fic writing is a creative release for me, and I absolutely love crafting and writing these stories that involve some of my favorite fictional characters. And I love interacting with other writers and fic readers, I love talking about ideas and exchanging headcanons and fangirling over my favorite writersā works. But (because thereās always a but), sometimes I just donāt have the mental energy or capacity to write at the end of the day when Iāve turned in 3 deadlines for work. Iāve got all these ideas floating in my head, but only so much time and mental energy I can dedicate to it.
What are your top five songs right now? Oh boy. So I live alone, which means Iāve got either music or Netflix on in the background 24/7 because ya girl doesnāt like silence. I have a different playlist for different moods. Iāll share my fav song from each of those playlists. Lol Fvck Somebody by The Wrecks (On my āSummer state of mindā playlist for when I wanna dance it out in my kitchen like an idiot)
Don Quixote by Drapht (On @talistheintrovertāās āMy Good Bitch Murphyā playlist for when Iām feeling *edgy*)
that way by Tate McRae (On my āPandemic Jamsā playlist bc I like angsty music and this song is a Bellarke MOOD)
Washington on Your Side from Hamilton (On my āFeeding my Broadway Obsessionā playlist for when I wanna sing show tunes and plot overthrowing the government)
Tea by Noah Davis (Shameless plug for Noah bc itās a bop and I literally dated Noahās older brother in junior high ā so proud of this kid for making his dreams a reality)
What are your inspirations (books, songs, other fic, really good cake)? All of the above, except I like pie more than cake. lol But really, I kind of use everything around me for inspiration. āThe Choices We Makeā is inspired by my love of Greyās Anatomy. āIntertwining your soul (with somebody else)ā is inspired my the first draft of my YA novel (though the setting was adapted to a grounder canonverse AU). āThe Day He Shut That Rocket Doorā and āShe called you for 2,199 daysā were inspired by @historyofbellarkeāsĀ headcanons that were brought up in S7 speccing conversations (shoutout to her for enabling my angsty ass). My most recent WIP āThere are some things written in the starsā that I started as part of Chopped (but will continue because Iām obsessed with the idea) is inspired by my love of Timeless. And I have an entire Notion database filled with fic ideas ā some one-shots and some multi-chapter fics ā that are inspired by quotes, songs, conversations with friends, books I love, shows I adore, random HCs that pop into my head while I watch, my own life experiences, etc. I take inspiration in any form it decides to come in. š
What first attracted you to Bellarke? What attracts you now? Iām a ho for enemies to lovers ā the idea that you can put your worst foot forward and show someone all the ugly parts of youā¦ and that theyāll see that and somehow look past it to see the good stuff too, falling in love with your whole self instead of just the pretty parts. Yeah, itās my favorite romance trope. And that tension is what originally drew me to Bellarke. Now, itās a combination of things. I love each of these characters in their own right. I relate to Clarke in a lot of ways, and I aspire to be her level of badass. I straight adore Bellamy Blake (flaws, stupid decisions, and all) and would marry him in a heartbeat if he were real ā Iām not even kidding. lol But I also love their dynamic. They are partners, best friends, perfect compliments to the other. They see each other in a way no one else does, and they are the one person the other constantly risks everything for. They are both so driven by their responsibilities to their people, yet that all typically goes out the window the moment the other is at risk. I donāt believe in soulmates in real life, but itās nice to get to believe in this fictional world that they are just made for each other.
BESIDES Bellarke, what character or pairing do you like best on t100? My favorite character besides Bellarke is John Murphy. His arc has been BY FAR the best on this show, going from that little shit in S1 to this āasshole we loveā in the middle to now a true hero in this final season. And through it all Richard Harmon has been amazing to watch on screen.
My favorite pairing besides Bellarke is Linctavia. Yes, that ship is problematic in a lot of ways, but I still loved their dynamic. Lincoln helped Octavia navigate this new world that she was so desperate to be apart of while being mindful of her safety. And I thought they were a good match ā he helped tame her fire without putting it out, and she helped challenge the way he was raised. Given time, I think they could have become one of the most stable and loving relationships on t100. Of course, that couldnāt happen because Jason needed Bellās actions in 3A to have heartbreaking consequences, O to spiral for her own character journey, and whatever mess happened off-screen between Ricky and him. But they still remain my favorite ship aside from Bellarke.
Why did you decide to start writing for bellarkefic-for-blm? The second I saw that Sam was planning on doing this, I reached out to ask how I could help/write/be involved. The BLM movement is so important, and this is an amazing way for me to contribute while pursuing my passions. Itās a way for the fandom to get involved and do something good. And ultimately, this helps organizations that need donations. Shameless plug for everyone to please go check out the Bellarke Fic for BLM page ā check out the many amazing writers and artists we have participating, and send in prompts. Most of us are allowing WIP chapter update requests, and there are a number of us (myself included) who are matching donations made! No donation is too small, and youāll be supporting a movement that is a necessity in the U.S. and beyond.
Whatās your writing process like? My mind is literal chaos, so I plan and outline like hell in order to make sense of everything. When I get an idea for a fic, it goes on my Notion database. Within Notion, I write down my inspiration for the idea, and a pretty in-depth summary of where I want the fic to go ā dialogue ideas, any feelings/emotions I want to invoke, literally just a brain dump of all my ideas. From there, Iāll arrange that brain dumb into an outline. If itās a one-shot, Iāll generally write the whole thing in the Notion doc. But multi-chapter fics will get a checklist within Notion for me to keep track of progress, and Iāll actually write the fic in Google Docs. I generally start writing from the beginning of a story, but if I get stuck or have an idea for a later scene, the fact that Iāve outlined heavily allows me to jump around as ideas come to me. Iāll read each one-shot or chapter after Iām done to make sure it flows before publishing. I post chapters for my WIPs as I write them, which I should really stop doing. lol For my readersā sakes, I should work ahead and publish on a schedule rather than making them wait for my slow ass to finish chapter to chapter. But right now, thatās my process!
What are some things youād like to recommend? Oh goodness, too many fics to possibly name. Instead, Iāll link to my AO3 rec bookmarks (which isnāt all-inclusive of the amazing fics Iāve read in this fandom, but itās got some good favs in there) and shout out all of our awesome Bellarke Fic for BLM writers. Yāall should check out their work (and send in prompts)!
Whereās the best place to find you (twitter? tumblr?) Iām @changingthefairy-tale on Tumblr and @changingthefairy_tale on AO3! My ask box is always open for anyone who wants to scream about the show, ask about specs, talk about my fics, etc. Come say hey!

Will this be a rant? Of sorts, maybe.
It seems now there is another discourse in VK fandom, this time about whether Ren and Ai will be a romantic couple or not. Firstly, Hino is drawing them in a suggestive way, thatās true.
Do I care if they end up together or not? Not really. She has drawn Kaname and Zero in a suggestive way many times, hell, even in recent covers Zero is literally all over Kaname. Not to mention Zero/Kaname has way more fanfictions and incredible fanarts than either of the canon straight couples. Itās true, just check it.
Think what you want, above illustration is pure Zero/Kaname and Yume.
And, in the below one, Zeroās hand...Sorry, two rivals and enemies just donāt do that.
Look at the above illustration, thatās not how two guys stand if they are enemies, they just donāt.
Secondly, both Ai and Ren have an intense need of anotherās blood. Now, many people say their relationship is creepyā¦
Sorry, but many shoujo mangas and mainstream novels have the same crap. The girl is obsessed with the boy and also ends up with him. Yikes. Gross.
And, those stories are celebrated. So, why be against these two? Oh, wait, itās because they are not hetero.
Hino is not doing anything great even if they do come out as a couple, Clamp has done it many times and Clamp works are way more popular than Hinoās can ever be.
X, a shoujo genre manga has Kamui and Fuuma.
They loved each other, donāt even try to argue with me about it.
Seishirou and Subaru, the most tragic couple of manga and anime are also in it. CCS has Yue with Clow Reed, Yukito/Yue and Touya, Sakura and Tomoyo, some of these feelings are one sided, but none of them are hated.
These couples are way more popular than whole VK manga. Rg Veda, another shoujo has Amaterasu and Souma, Taishakuten and Ashura-ou, Yasha and Ashura can also be interpreted as an M/M couple. Oh, wait. Thatās canon. They are together in Tsubasa.
And, donāt get me started on Fai and Kurogane. There you go people, these are shonen and shoujo mangas which have same sex couples.
And, the readers know there was something going on between Fai and Kurogane even if itās not stated explicitly.
Clamp literally said,ādo not call Fuuma and Kamui brothersā. They are soulmates. They donāt even mention the obsessed fangirl, kotori.
Arina Tanemura, whose stories are a perfect example of aĀ fangirl ending with the guy they were after, also has a single M/M couple in one of her works. Mostly in her stories, the main girl likes one guy, but in the end, that guy never ends up with her. He ends up with one of the obsessed fangirls.
Am I still bitter about how dirty the mangaka did Itsuki Otomiya? Yes. The sweetheart doesnāt even know Haine was his daughter, and the whole bloody cast had coloured illustrations, a freaking artbook is there for the series, but not a single illustration for him. Yikes.
I hope she redeems herself and makes Tokita and Chikage a couple in 31 Ai dreams. The only series of hers which didnāt have this clichĆ© was Sakurahime Kaden and Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne.
And, letās be honest, Eiichi would have have ended up with another fangirl if he wasnāt dead in Full moon. Thank god he was spared that bullshit. But, then again, he dies. Thatās not good either.
Gentlemanās alliance cross, Nekota are just bad. Yes, the art is beautiful, but that doesnāt mean the males of her series deserved to end up with obsessive fangirls.
The one with underage relationship, Nekota or whatever [thank god that was never picked up by Viz.] In this, the blue haired dude, Serizawa, who the main girl liked from the beginning didnāt end up with her, he ended up with a fangirl. Ugh.
And, it is incestuous, the girl has feelings for her underage cousin.Ā Right.
Her art is beautiful, but damn it, her stories are so annoying.
For her only M/M couple in shinshi doumei cross, she had to make one half of the MM couple a cross dresser.
The guy, Maora was wearing womanās clothing every time he and Maguri were shown together. He was never once shown as his real, tall self with Maguri.
And, she has said she isnāt comfortable with yaoi, but is okay with shonen ai.
Right.
But the point is, itās been done many times.
In Hana Kimi, one of the protagonistās elder brother is gay. He was the schoolās physician if I am not wrong. So, Hino is not doing anything new.
Kyou Kara Maou is a shoujo manga, but it has Wulfrum and Yuri, two guys as a main couple. Granted, nothing happens, but they are engaged.
The manga was published in Asuka, a shoujo magazine.
Same goes for uraboku, Luka loves Yuki, regardless of the fact whether he is a female or a male. Senshirou and Kuroto were together, Hotsuma and Shusei were married in previous lives and they were very much together in the present as well.
Do I think Ren and Ai will end up together, I dunno. Maybe they will, maybe they wonāt. But I donāt think she will show them as a couple. If she will, fine. If she doesnāt, then also fine. They have an intense desire to be with each other, and their relationship is not parallel to Kaname and Yuukiās or Haruka and Juriās.
One can say they are like Rido, Yuukiās uncle, not like the above two couples.
There are many differences between them and the two couples.
And, letās not forget the harem Sara created, in fact she even kissed one of the girls.
Do I care about Ren and Ai ? No.
My sole reason for reading this manga is: Yume. Just bring Yuuki back and show Yume happily ever after. I really donāt care who ends up with whom.
But some reasons regarding Renai are hypocritical. This manga has incest, why are you being bothered by it now? Hell, she drew Ichiru and Zero in suggestive way too, and Zeroās care for Ichiru could also be questioned in that case.
I am not sure if the above is Zero and Ichiru or Zero with another personality of his, I donāt want to see my artbook right now, but it can be seen as Zero and Ichiru.
We donāt like yuri and yaoi.
Well, in that case I really hope it happens so itāll tick off the people who make this statement. Yes, itās a derogatory statement.
If the mangaka wants to do it, she can, itās her choice. Hate her for it, plenty do. Zekis and yumes do for their reasons. I dislike the way she does things too, I hate many things she has done. But, hey she still did them.
Read Yona of the dawn in that case, thatās the only series which isnāt āproblematicā
But,Ā Kija and Jaeha can be shipped in that too. I do ship them. And, the author has drawn shonen ai doujinshiās.
And, Yona was in love with Su-won in the beginning, who is her cousin. Incest is incest, whether itās between siblings or cousins, they are family.
I really donāt think Hino will show Ren and Ai as a couple. Siblings who are weirdly close, yes. Romantic couple, I donāt think so. If I am wrong, fine.
Just give me my Yume happy ending, and Takuma and Seiren scenes. I literally donāt care about the kids relationship. I just donāt. First, I had to suffer through that traitorās crap with the stupid bint, Sayori, now this.
Edit :Ā Finally I read this chapterā¦
I donāt understand how anyone can even compare whatever crap that is going on between Ai and Ren to Yume and Haruka / Juri. The Kuran couples never looked so fucking weird with each other.
I was absolutely right in thinking their feelings for each other are reminiscent of what Rido felt. Just because Ai is Yumeās daughter doesnāt mean sheās a perfect character. Give me a break. Then again she had a crush on Zero as well.
And, she was raised among people like Ruka and Aidou, traitors and obsessed idiots. Itās no wonder she turned out idiotic.
She looks weird when she says, āshe had her sister with herā to Youko.
I am not going to post the image cause its just bad.
Yume and Haruka/Juri were never so fucking creepy. Never.
Ren is just so bland and sad in everything that I donāt know what to think. Youko was the only one who wasnāt weird in this Ch.
The author should just wrap this up, itās neither interesting nor is evoking any feelings in readers. Itās as bad Sayori/Aidou crap. Just stop with the useless story arcs, show Kaname and Yuuki together and end this shit.
I really donāt think the two girls will end up together. Their scenes arenāt sweet, and if she wants to show them, just do it and move on. They are both boring and least interesting. They are so bad it will not matter whether are together or apart.
They are as bad as other creepily obsessed M/F couples in novels and shoujo manga where the obsessed fangirl ends with the boy. This trope itself is gross. Who even cares about them?
They are only being hyped because they are two girls. When people thought Ren was a boy there wasnāt much reaction. I know there wasnāt. But now that they are two girlsā¦
Hate them because they are stupid, no point in saying we donāt like them because its FF relationship. Thatās just bigotry. Or maybe the author should be honest and say I wanted Zero and Kaname to fuck but Yuuki kept on getting in the way. So, I decided to pair their daughters together. because according to the author incest is fine in VK. Ā Just drop this crap already Hino.
I mean what the hell is up with this boring arc ?
I donāt even understand why stupid shit like this is overlooked in MF couples but if same happens in same sex, everyone is like, looks its unhealthy.Ā Incest, age difference, obsessed idiots/ fangirls, they are all bad.
I love Clamp, but that Rika and Terada thing was just plain gross. Same goes for Rin and Sesshoumaru.
I kept on telling myself about the latter one, no they are a parent child relationship. But at one point, I had to accept it was anything but family love. I love Sesshoumaru and always will. But I canāt get behind Rin/Sessh or whatever nonsense it was. Sessrin is celebrated, itās a fact. Itās creepy, donāt deny it.
I know some of their artists and Sesskag [yuck] kept on leaving rude comments on SessKik fanworks, my favourite ship.
And Terada/Rika thing is overlooked because, letās be honest CCS is fucking awesome. I overlook it and concentrate on yue yukito/ touya, syaoran/sakura.
I just want this RenAi thing to go away. I canāt stand either of them. Just show Kaname and Yuuki together and end this series. Hino should wrap it up and start a new one. VK will not gain the popularity it had at one point no matter what. The author is just coming off as desperate.

Isaac Theory Post
(The right and bottom pics are mine.)
Why Isaac will become the Isaac the OG fans are talking about
I am making this theorey post partly because itās fun and because I love all of our Castlevania Isaacs. I did much research for it, and tried to include things that feel like Castlevania. I give credit to @solidfalcon for helping me write some of it, and sitting there listening to me babble on and on about him for HOURS, and credit to @lucien-lachance for MANY OF THE IMAGES. She has a huge collection of Isaac pictures from the games, Iām so pleased!! Thank you both!!!!
Now, onto Isaac: from games to screen, he would change, though only to tell a great story. Isaac is a complex character whose story needs to be told with care and delicacy. His story in season 2 of the show is only beginning. Being without luxurious crimson locks barely changes his story, it only begins it. And it can only grow from there. Iāve never truly seen him transform before, except in my own headcanon-filled brain, so Iām THRILLED to finally be seeing it on screen!
This is Castlevania, where the design of a character is laced with storytelling and meaning. If Isaac is meant to stay proper looking and professional, he wouldnāt be the same character. His appearance right now doesnāt take away from who he is, it adds to him, and Iām going to go into detail as to why.
Game spoilers below cut!
Animation Isaac vs Game Isaac
Game Isaac: Passion, Devotion To Dracula, āEvilnessā, Knife Obsession, Vengeance, Wants to be the favourite, Uncomfortable to look at, Licks things.
Animation Isaac: Passion, Devotion To Dracula, āEvilnessā, Knife Obsession, Vengeance.
I didnāt give animation Isaac the last 3 things that I put with game Isaac because we donāt know anything else. Season 2 isnāt even out yet. Therefore the rest of the post is where what we know about game Isaac becomes theory for animation Isaac. Heās an Isaac-shaped glass that is only a little filled, and it will continue to fill with more Isaac-ey goodness as the show progresses.
The Long Awaited Son
When some Christians hear the name āIsaacā (with no last name) they think first, of Isaac:
(Credit to the creative photographer.)
Draculaās story is sort of like an inverted Bible story, making it darker but also very clever if you know what youāre seeing. In Castlevania, although Dracula loved his first son, Alucard, he didnāt become the person he wanted him to be, a son who shared his views and would help him take revenge for Lisa. Now here we have Isaac who was taken in by Dracula as a child, the āsonā Dracula would have always wanted: Passionate about Draculaās goal and willing do anything to make it happen. While Alucard cares for humanity, Isaac is passionate to destroy humanity, just like Dracula.
In the Bible, Abrahamās first born wasnāt what he wanted. His first born would become a person who was hostile, while his second son, Isaac would become everything he was promised, a great man who gave blessings.
Also: Isaacās name means ālaughter.ā (Insert a gif of Isaac laughing here. I reached image limit in this post twt )
Child of Judas
Quote from Isaacās page on the Castlevania wiki: āIsaac's name functions both as a hint that all isn't quite as it seems with him, and also as a reference to a particular bit of vampire lore. Biblically, Itzhak (Isaac) was the son of Abraham, who was almost sacrificed as a test of his father's faith. Unlike his namesake Forgemaster, however, Itzhak survived. The vampire folklore his name references appears in the short story "A Kiss of Judas" by Julian Osgood Field, writing under the pseudonym X.L. A principal character in this story is Isaac Lebedenko, who dies and, when reborn, becomes a type of vampire known as a Child of Judas in order to exact revenge on a deserving enemy. Interestingly enough, Children of Judas are said to have red hair.ā Isaacās name, as the quote says, is a hint that all is not quite what it seems, the same is true for his appearance.
Another quote from the same wiki page: āHis clothing, too, is yet another hint as to his true nature. It appears as if Isaac is wearing only the remains of his former uniform. The Prelude to Revenge manga, packaged with the soundtrack sampler CD, uses Isaac's attire as a symbol of his mind unraveling. The madder he gets, the more tattered his clothing gets, until we see him in-game in purely ornamental armor bits and those strange pants. Thanks to Dracula's machinations, Isaac is only the broken pieces of the man he once was. Unfortunately, Isaac erroneously blames Hector for the destruction of his life.ā āOnly the broken pieces of the man he once was.ā What we are seeing right now IS the man he once was. We have yet to see him slowly unravel both outward and inward to become the person heās fated to be. Iām looking forward to it!
My theory for why he could get his Castlevania appearance parallels both the Biblical Isaac and the vampire lore Isaac. Biblical Isaac was nearly sacrificed, then later became something great, while āA Kiss of Judasā Isaac died and then returned to life as something terrible. Games Isaac was used as a vessel to become Dracula. Animated series Isaac is going to suffer, and go through a change, too, which may turn him into that same āvesselā that he became in the games.
Isaac in games canon, after going insane from Draculaās Curse, didnāt actually change physically, only his clothing melted away.
If in the animation he were to transform the same way as in the games, and physically as well, I think that would be stronger story storytelling. What changes physically is very easy to guess.
Blood Red Hair
Quotes from the Children of Judas page on vampires. com. (Which shows a picture of Isaac btw...) āThis group of ruthless bloodsuckers were once found in Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania and you could recognize them due to their blood-red hair.ā āThese guys are known mainly by oral traditions.ā
āMlemā
āWicked vampires were said to have the power to drain their victimās blood and life force with a single kiss or bite.ā
Isaac isnāt a vampire in the game at this point in the above picture, but his kiss is still deadly~ (By that I mean he accompanies it with a knife stab). (Donāt worry, Trevor is ok, Isaac just wanted some Trevor blood.) Another thing that supports this theory is that the creators of the Castlevania series are very inclusive with their vampire lore. They want the show to be good, to be Castlevania, and also a great vampire story. So seeing as how we have yet to see the special āblood red hairā of a āChild of Judasā vampire, itās safe to say Isaac may become one (in a sense). This is why game Isaacās hair is redder and more beautiful than that of any other redhead weāve seen in Castlevania.
Swoon~
The Dragon
As many know, Draculaās name comes from Dracul which means āThe Dragonā or āThe Devil.ā Dracula gets referred to as the Devil a lot in the animation, and in the games he also turns into a dragon when you fight him. Isaac is āa dragonā, and will become a vampire. This is true to games canon, as Isaac has, in fact become a vampire before, only, he became literally Dracula. The āChild of Judasā similarities symbolized that the transformation would take place, as does his massive dragon tattoo that goes down his front, twists around his leg and slides up his back representing the Dragon. Animation Isaac does have tattoos, but none that we seen thus far are dragon-like. Not yet anyway~
(I drew the bottom right one for a closeup of the dragon face. The sketch to the left of it is official concept art.) When his clothing melts away and reveals the dragon tattoo, it symbolizes Isaac losing himself and becoming a dragon.
The Forgemaster crest displayed above shows two dragons. Both are Hector and Isaac. In the game, the Curse of Darkness attempts to transform the Forgemasters into Dracula. They both take on Dracula-like personality traits before Hector finally resists, and Isaac Is the one to lose himself.
In the games, all of this symbolism represented that he would be a mere pawn in Draculaās scheme and become a vessel for Dracula. However, all of that symbolism is not yet present in animation Isaac, so this entire theory post is here to explain why it will become present.
The Biblical symbols of the Dragon and the Beast talk about the Dragon giving the Beast the power to return to life. The Beast that returned to life looked and spoke like a dragon. That would be neat if the writers parallel these symbols too! The Dragon being Dracula and the dragon-like Beast being Isaac.
Anguish
Dracula takes in both Isaac and Hector at a young age. Treated poorly by humanity, and taken in by Dracula, they probably saw him as their father figure. The Curse of Darkness that rips through the people during Castlevania 3, the same one that causes Isaacās madness is probably going to be cast during season 2 of the animation. Right now we see him as a seemingly obedient, calm, collective but somewhat violent and angry individual. Someone led by his heart. When the curse is cast, bit by bit, much of that will begin to break away. When Dracula, his inspiration, his father figure, the one thing that gave him life and purpose, is defeated and taken away from him. And then, when Isaac is left for dead by Hector, the curse finally takes complete hold of him. Dracula's curse. Isaac transforms in appearance to reflect the change within. His hair has grown and become wild, his clothing has fallen apart and only ornamental pieces remain. He is only the broken pieces of what he once was. He is MAD.
So when I say he will become a vampire, I mean he will descend into madness and think that his desire for VENGEANCE AGAINST HECTOR will make it all better, but instead, he is just a vessel, a means to an end. He becomes Dracula, he becomes a vampire, a āChild of Judasā in a symbolic sense. It is symbolic in that, he's not a vampire by any traditional sense, but simply because Dracula takes him over, and he becomes the vampire. The symbolism that the death and rebirth he faces before transformation is perhaps not his own death and rebirth, it is Draculaās past death and rebirth through Isaac.
That would be super cool if he became a vampire himself, though, just a thought.
As you see, I fully expect to see our Isaac form before our eyes in ways I have only previously dreamed these past 8+ years of being a Curse of Darkness fan!
Fire Symbolism
Iāve read in other theory posts in other fandoms that fire in art and literature can symbolize many things. One of those things is death and rebirth. In Castlevania, this symbolism is definitely present, and EXTREMELY heavy-handed. Lisa dies, burned as a witch, from her dead remains ascends an explosion of flame. Who is in that flame? Dracula. So yes, they will use the plot point of Dracula dying and returning to life, and just like in the games, it will be through Isaac. I could go into more detail on fire symbolism as to why, but I think you get me by this point!
Red oni and Blue Oni
Another quote from the wiki: āIsaac and Hector together embody the "Red Oni and Blue Oni" trope. Isaac is denoted by red, and is emotional, temperamental and led by his heart. Hector, in blue, is the more logical and rational of the pair and is able to think things through, considers what he has been told, and in the end saves himself from an ill fate.ā In the series, Hector is dressed in blue just as he is in the games, but Isaac has yet to show much red. To continue to fit this trope the way heās meant to be, he HAS to go through his destined change. In the trailer, Isaac is seen in the past passionately crying with tears in his eyes as heās about to take what I assume is revenge against someone.
(My poor boi q-q) He still very much embodies the trope with Hector, but not so much visually. He will transform most likely in the exact way I said he would. The seriesā first four episodes did nothing but add to the series, not take away. Isaac is going to change, and when he does, he will finally truly mirror Hector, and he will fully become the āmonsterā he was meant to be. By āmonsterā, what I really mean is: mistake-making, tragic sad boy who I want to cover in fifty blankies and pillows and give grilled cheese to.
TLDR: Isaac will slowly unravel to madness and become the heartbroken mess he was in the games. Iām super excited!!!
~End~ If we watch S2 and I end up wrong and got nothing right, then thatās okay cuz this whole thing was real fun to write. 10/10 recommended write up~

Panavision revives 70mm for a digital world: part 1
The mid-20th century epic movie experience is returning to a screen near youā at your local cineplex, in your home, and possibly even on your phone.
A few years ago, while on a tech scout, I shot a stunning reference photo with a Canon 5D Mk2. Something just felt different: it had a sense of volumeāof space within the sceneāthat I couldnāt explain. Initially I thought the location had much to do with that feel, but I found that I couldnāt recapture it on the shoot day with an S35 camera. There was something about the depth within that full frame still image that an S35 sensor couldnāt deliver.
It reminded me of the days, long ago, when I shot medium format (120) stills with my old Mamiya camera. The ānormalā perspective lens for that format was the 80mm, as opposed to 50mm in 35mm stills format, and my wide lens was a 40mm rather than a 28mm or 25mm. There was something magical about the 40mm lens as it captured a wide angle of view but without any obvious wide angle distortion. This gave the image a āthree dimensionalityā and sense of volume that I couldnāt capture on smaller film stocks. I never quite understood why this was, and eventually I forgot all about it.
Until now. I see this look in all the images Iāve seen captured by Panavisionās new 8K DXL camera.
Being the curious sort, I became obsessed with discovering why this look, which I associate with epic films such as Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago (both shot with Panavision cameras and lenses), is specific to large format cameras.
Now, after a long discussion with Panavision and Light Iron, I think I have my answers: (1) resolution, and (2) optics.
Part 1 of this series is all aboutā¦
RESOLUTION: ITāS DETAIL, NOT SHARPNESS
Years ago, a lens expert told me that there are two things in lens design that are mutually exclusive: contrast and resolution. āYou can have more of one than the other,ā he told me, ābut you canāt have lots of both.ā And then he walked away and left me hanging.
Thanks to materials provided by Panavision I think Iāve solved this personal mystery.
Nearly two years ago I attended a press presentation on the new Panavision 8K DXL camera. Michael Cioni of LightIron spoke of many things that day, but what stuck in my mind is that āresolution is not sharpness.ā He showed examples of 8K images that looked stunning, but didnāt look sharp.

The image above was captured digitally using a Phase One camera with a Leaf digital back. The original file is a 600MB+ file that is too large to host on PVC servers, so Iāve cropped a few 740px wide sections (the maximum width PVC can display within a page) to illustrate that sharpness and resolution are not the same.
Every one of those stills was cropped out of that single large 11K image, but they donāt look sharp at all. And, indeed, any sufficiently high resolution image should not look terribly sharp, because sharpness comes about as the result of contrast. This is one of the better descriptions of sharpness that Iāve found, and the bottom line is that an image with crisp steps between tones or hues is considered āsharp.ā That does not mean that high resolution images are automatically sharp, because the more steps a camera and lens system can capture across a transition from bright to dark, or from one color to another, the smoother they will look.
Low resolution images look sharp because they are unable to capture all the nuances of those tone and hue steps, compressing subtle detail beyond the ability of the system to capture into larger, coarser, more abrupt transitions.
The same is true of lenses. Many are good at what is called ālarge structure contrast,ā which means that they reproduce coarse detail with a lot of contrast but may not capture much fine detail. Tone and hue transitions are abrupt, which results in perceived sharpness. High resolution lenses capture more detail across transitions, with the result that they feel smoother and lower in contrast.
I know of a very expensive line of lenses that have a reputation for extreme sharpness and contrast, and yet if one measures them against a competing brand of lenses that is known for softer images and lower contrast, one will find that the āsoftā lenses capture more fine detail than do the āsharpā lenses. Thereās nothing wrong with this, as we shouldnāt choose lenses based solely on how they reproduce lines on a chart, but itās good to understand why oneās tools act the way they do, especially when the reasons are counter intuitive.
Beyond resolution alone, color fidelity is improved because the sensor captures very delicate transitions between hues. The same is true of dynamic range, as capturing more tones in the image results in richer shadows and more detailed highlights. Both of those influence visual ādepth cuesā that trick our brains into perceiving depth where there isnāt any.
Another Hasselblad/Leaf 11K digitally-captured image.
These textures are stunning in 8K, but the background is equally interesting. The subtlety of hues across the out-of-focus background between the leaves is both complex and smooth. Itās unlikely that a lower resolution camera would capture this same richness. Thatās important, as many of us choose lenses based on the quality of the out-of-focus image (bokeh). Sensor resolution and image bit depth play an equally important role in reproducing soft backgrounds, although this has not been obvious to many of us as we havenāt worked with moving pictures that approach this kind of color depth and resolution.
Whatās more, the smoothness of this image will scale to nearly any resolution. For example, the images above are sections clipped from a 600MB TIFF with 16-bit color, but theyāve been saved off as 16-bit PNG files. Most computer monitors fall into the eight to ten bit range, so the images youāre seeing above are not as they were captured. The fact that they still appear smooth on your eight or ten bit monitor gives you some idea of how much smoother those transitions must be in the original 16-bit file.
The circle on the right may appear sharper on certain displays, at certain viewing distances, due to the harder edges that prevent the circle from being perfectly round. The higher resolution circle may not appear as sharp, but it will appear perfectly round upon close examination and will scale more easily to different sized screens.
Oversampling is always better, as much of the character of an image can be preserved through pixel interpolation as they are scaled downwards. Lower resolution images capture less of these qualities, and give them up more easily during the scaling process.
I donāt have a good example of a high resolution image vs. a sharp image, so I tried to make one:
Original.
I applied a moderate amount of sharpening to the full resolution TIFF file, and then cropped in to see what Iād done:
Original.
Sharpened.
Contrast has been enhanced, but fine detail has been lost. I know of no way to sharpen this image without losing information. This is true during capture as well: a low resolution image that appears sharp and contrasty may lack detail found in a higher resolution yet softer-looking image. The higher resolution image can always be made to look sharper, but a low resolution image that appears sharp will always lack fine detail.
There was a time when camera sensors were small enough, and transmission standards were poor enough, that every camera came with a ādetail circuit.ā This bit of wizardry drew an artificial black line around areas of high contrast to make transitions appear even sharper. This technique can still be used in post to add a sense of sharpness to a soft image, butāonce addedāit can never be removed.
HOW MUCH RESOLUTION IS ENOUGH?
Thereās an argument that 8K cameras are overkill. There are no cinema chains that can project an image at that kind of resolution. Few can project 4K images, and most are limited to 2K at best. Thereās an argument that projector optics can degrade the image further, as can image compression artifacts, and some say the human eye canāt see 4K or 2K resolution images at common viewing distances anyway.
This may be technically correct, but it is not actually the case. The eye does not function alone. Images are generated within the brain, which has some built-in image enhancing features that allow us to see detail beyond that what our eyes can capture. Resolution isnāt about creating images that appeal to the eye, but to the entire human visual system.
For example:
By Gwestheimer, courtesy of WikiMedia.
The two dark spots at the top of the image represent stars in the night sky, as seen by the eye. As long as they are separated by one rod or cone, the brain will see them as two stars instead of one elongated star. Thatās resolution.
The lines at the bottom represent vernier acuity, or the ability of the brain to discern a break in a line that falls across multiple rods and cones by detecting where the light center of the lines are, with precision that is greater than the resolution of the eye itself.
Itās not enough to exceed the human eyeās resolution. You have to exceed the resolution of the human eye in conjunction with the human brainās visual processing power, which has the ability to resolve details beyond the resolution of the human eye.
RESOLUTION: CAPTURING THE QUALITY OF A LENS
High resolution sensors capture lens characteristics better than lower resolution sensors. If one projects a single point of light through a lens, the result can vary wildly depending on the design and desired qualities of the lens.
A single point of light, when projected through a lens, is affected by spherical aberration in a variety of ways, depending on the lens design and objectives:
This distortion is one of many contributing factors that gives a lens its particular look. This pattern will fall across more photo sites on a high resolution sensor than on a low resolution sensor, so a high resolution sensor will better preserve a lensās unique characteristics. This is important as the quality of a lens is one of the few things that canāt be manipulated in post.
Thanks to advantages resulting from oversampling, as well as the ability of the human brain to discern detail beyond what is technically available, lens characteristics captured in high resolution should scale effectively to any size of screen and still reveal more of that lensās personality than an image captured at a lower resolution with the same lens.
Thereās more to this story than resolution, however. This is where things really get exciting. Click here for part 2.
